Desert Crossings

Location: Gwen Harris Concert Hall, Paradise Valley, AZ
Description: 36 clerestory art glass windows

My intention was to make joyous, expressive, lyrical windows to accompany the music in the concert hall. The shapes are based on my sketches from local desert plants. The desert forms are overlaid with rhythmic measures of musical composition, using the baton patterns universally employed by conductors. These intersections give an ever-changing illuminated pattern of crossings and sense of journey.

Prophesy

Location: World Youth Day HQ, Koln, Germany
Description: Prayer room window & tracery

This was the beginning of my transition to more painterly work using enamel techniques. It has not been a one-way trip. I still used antique glass and leaded techniques when the window and the setting called for it, but this window heralded a new adventure in colour and light.

Recollection Series

Location: Ontario Association of Architects, Toronto, ON
Description: 6 exhibition windows for the stairwell

“The OAA was an ideal locale for Sarah’s architectonic focus in the Wind’s Eye Exhibition. The Recollections panels are flat rectangles of white opal glass screened with successive melded ground plans and elevations of architectural archetypes, flanked at the left and right by screened images of Egyptian Pharaoh Akhenaton as visionary and sage. The panels, evocative of a universal geometry, blended neatly with the three-dimensional geometry of the OAA building itself and are fully complementary to their architectural environment.”

Sukkot, Shavuot, Pesach Windows

Location: Beth Tikvah Synagogue, Toronto, ON
Description: 3 Windows

The windows are an invitation to prayer. The background of each window is suggestive of the time of day for prayer, and together the three windows express an eternal cycle and passage of time. A blue thread that is woven through the windows adds a dynamic, energetic element that binds them together.

The Sea of Kuwait

Location: Embassy of Kuwait, Ottawa, ON
Description: Reception Foyer/Staircase Window

This expressive glass façade frames a white marble staircase in the Embassy reception room. Gold and copper leaf are applied in a gestural, calligraphic abstraction that floats across a sandy, coral landscape. Columns of geometric, screen-printed Islamic design are interspersed in the moving sea. The combination of colours and textures cast ever-changing light patterns on the marble and glass balustrade.

The Sea of Kuwait

Location: Embassy of Kuwait, Ottawa, ON

At the end of a long passageway is a turquoise gem evoking the azure colour of the Sea of Kuwait. The delicate windblown reeds draw us towards the corridor’s transparent veil.

Welcoming Light

Location: Christ Church Cathedral, Vancouver, BC
Description: 3 Glass Facades for the Bell Spire – 204 panels

The new glass bell spire at Christ Church Cathedral is a lantern for the community. The message of the Cathedral is expressed as a meeting place of land, sea, sky and bell chime within a spire of windswept candlelight.
