Symbolically, the trees speak to the role of the teachers with their grounded outreach and sheltering branches. Moving around and through the branches are the birds in eight spirit house colours, creating a connection to students. The richly coloured root system celebrates the founders of the school.

Singing the Light is an integrated artwork continuously spanning 60 feet and five floors at Greenwood College School. The trees, root systems, spirit house colours, birds and light are an allegory for the school community. On each floor, I created an interplay of transparent, translucent, and opaque glass — giving a sense of layered depth and mystery.

Location: Western Theological Seminary, Holland, MI

The window design draws on strong connections between the seminary, human and religious history, the local community, and the surrounding landscape. They include local imagery: Lake Michigan, trees by the lake, sand dunes, and even the town plan of Holland framed by white trees, based on scriptural text from Revelations.

The art committee offered thoughts about inspiration, exploration, and the continuum of memory, making it clear that the artwork for the new seminary was meant to inspire spiritual meditation and to generate discussion, not copy well-known images. The idea that resonated the most was “continuum of memory,” which opened the door for symbols and visual impressions to be imprinted in the glass.

A vivid sun, taken from Champlain’s 1617 Map & New World sketches, is the anchor for the window, its sweeping rays of light encompassing all of Creation. Radiant light passes from the heaven sat the top of the window to the shoreline of Collingwood’s Georgian Bay.

A speeding comet and the emblematic blue and white bands of Mother Teresa’s headscarf remind us of her famous quote “Come Be My Light”.

“The stained-glass window Sarah Hall did for Jessie’s should be part of tours of this city. They are, literally, stunning. Made up of prisms and bits of iridescent glass, they shatter sunlight into dancing colour that mesmerizes us. The effect is delight: people always smile when they first see the windows. I call that art at its finest – creating not only beauty but a message about the human spirit.”
